O Sister, Where Art Thou?
This morning’s paper tells me that ten younger Danish artists have been chosen by the foundation Realdania and their counsellor Poul Erik Tøjner (director of Louisiana) to decorate one of the four residential palaces of Amalienborg, the one where Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary are going to live.
Great idea! There is a long tradition of appointing important artists to decorate royal palaces and because of this tradition Denmark has rich installations of art from many different epochs.
The only thing that really annoys me is that out of ten artists they have only found one woman worthy of such an appointment. That is so sad and wrong and unfortunately typical. Wouldn’t it have been great if the tradition of decoration had been enriched by a step towards modernity by letting half of the artists be women? That would have been a strong and good statement coming from one of the most important players on the Danish art scene (Realdania). Especially as we have a very active and modern royal couple.
Kasper Bonnén, Jesper Christiansen, Erik A. Frandsen, Eske Kath, John Kørner, Tal R, Morten Schelde, Jeppe Hein, Kathrine Ærtebjerg and Olafur Eliasson. All of them fine artists. Here with Frederik and Mary.
Shame on you Realdania and Poul Erik Tøjner – you have not shown yourself equal to the responsibility.
